Guamúchil, botanical name Pithecellobium dulce is a fruit native to Mesoamerica (Mexico, Central and South America). Cuauhmochitl, Nahuatl name for Guamúchil, are the fruit of a thorned tree that is also commonly known as Madrasthorn or Monkey pod.

They resemble a monkey tail which alludes to their name “Monkey pod.” They have a cotton like texture, similar to inga edulis with more chewiness. They are slightly bitter and sweet, giving a floral taste with hints of apple, pineapple and peach. Some fruits may not be sweet.

How to Eat: You may eat this fruit raw or prepared with salt, chili and lemon. They are also traditionally prepared in drinks. To eat pull apart skin layer which is green or pink, eat only the white flesh. Do not eat seeds. Seeds are viable and can be planted.
